From hiccups to healing adds growth in yourself and in your marriage. Growth doesn’t happen overnight, and it doesn’t stop once you say, “I do.” Every season of life, whether joyful or challenging, calls for a new level of maturity, patience, and understanding. That’s why God reminds us to renew our minds daily. It’s a reminder to refocus, to let go of yesterday’s mistakes, and to stay anchored in His truth instead of being swept away by emotions or old habits.

Marriage is more than sacrifice; it is covenant and commitment. A covenant means your relationship is sacred. It is not based on fleeting feelings, but on promises made before God and each other. A commitment means showing up every day with intention, even when it’s hard. This requires us to set aside selfish desires and ask, “How can I build up my spouse? How can I create space for us to thrive together?”

Choose to Let Go

When we choose to let go of pride and allow God’s character to shape our actions, something powerful happens. We begin to see our marriage less as a tug-of-war and more as a partnership, where both are pulling in the same direction. This shift helps us listen better, argue less destructively, and forgive more freely.

The truth is, healthy marriages are not built by chance, they are built by consistent choices to grow, serve, and love. When both partners commit to personal growth, the marriage naturally grows too. However, don’t wait on your spouse, change begins with self.

Work Though the Hiccups

Believe it or not, when you choose to keep the lines of communication open, contentment begins to make its way into the marriage, even in difficult seasons. My own journey has had its share of unforeseen challenges, and at times it felt like the hiccups would define us. But as we worked through them, the second time around, I realized those struggles weren’t the end of our story. They became the very moments that shaped us, taught us, and made us better. If you’re in the middle of it right now, don’t lose heart. What feels like a setback today can become the foundation for deeper love and resilience tomorrow.
