Would you happen to know your spouse? It may seem to be an odd questions, but…

There’s a difference between knowing your spouse and truly understanding them. I’m not referring to knowing them in the biblical sense, but in the everyday sense, knowing their heart, their needs, their evolving desires. When we first fall in love, it feels as if we have our spouse completely figured out. We know their favorite foods, how they like things cooked, where they shop, and all the little habits that made us smile in the beginning. But as the years pass and life continues to shift, that sense of knowing can slowly fade. Suddenly, the person we once felt so familiar with can begin to feel like a mystery.

Drifting Into Routine

Why does this happen? Whose fault is it? Are we pointing fingers, quietly nursing resentment, or assuming the other person should “just know” what we need? Maybe work has slowly taken priority, consuming the best of our energy. Maybe the children, though a blessing, have taken so much of our time that we unintentionally neglected the relationship that created the family in the first place. Or perhaps we’ve simply drifted into routine, forgetting that understanding our spouse requires continual curiosity and intentional care.

Get Understanding

Understanding grows only where time is invested. You cannot know a person you do not spend time with. You cannot understand needs you do not pause to listen to. Take a moment to reflect on where your time is going, and whether it reflects what matters most to you. When you intentionally slow down, ask questions, listen deeply, and reconnect, you open the door to rediscovering the heart of the one you vowed to love. True understanding in marriage is not built in a single moment, it’s nurtured daily through presence, patience, and purposeful love.

Take a few minutes to answer the question below:

In what ways have I intentionally sought to understand my spouse lately, and where might I need to slow down, listen, or reconnect to truly know their heart again?
